Botox and Fillers Q & A

Are All Fillers the Same?

Dermal fillers are gel-based and injected under the skin to add volume. Dermal fillers come in different formulations that make them more appropriate for different areas of the face.

What is the Difference Between Botox Cosmetic and Dermal Fillers?

Like injectable fillers, Botox is used to reduce the appearance of wrinkles. However, Botox uses a purified form of the Botulinum toxin to temporarily relax the muscles that cause wrinkles. Using an ultra fine needle, the injections are placed into the muscle resting just beneath the skin. This causes the nerve impulses to be blocked and the facial muscles to become relaxed as the activity in the muscles is reduced. Once these muscles are at rest, the skin appears smoother, creating a more natural and relaxed appearance. Results typically last up to three to four months, though continuous treatments are helpful to maintain the effects over time. Injectable fillers use an ingredient to physically fill in wrinkles from below the skin's surface to reduce their appearance. Dermal fillers work for anyone who is interested in erasing facial wrinkles or adding volume to the lips, cheeks, or under-eye hollows. Examples of fillers Dr. Woolrich works with include Radiesse, Juvederm, Voluma XC, Volbella XC, Sculptra, Boletero, and Restylane. Dermal fillers are not permanent, but they can create a noticeable improvement in the skin for many months. There is no significant downtime required after a procedure. An initial consultation with Dr. Woolrich will help determine which dermal fillers or Botox are right for you.

Can I Combine a Dermal Filler Treatment with Another Procedure?

Yes, combination approaches are quite common and are often recommended to help patients resolve several aesthetic concerns simultaneously. It's perfectly safe to mix dermal fillers or combine them with Botox.

Is Botox Treatment Painful?

No significant pain is experienced other than the prick of the small needle being injected into the skin. Some patients have compared the injection to a bee sting or a bug bite. The effects of Botox will start to show in as little as 3 days, and more significant effects are usually seen in about 10 days. The approximate number of injections required will vary based on each patient’s individual wants or needs.

What Else Can Botox Treat?

Besides being a popular treatment for younger looking skin, Botox is also a useful treatment for:

  • Chronic migraine management and headache prevention
  • Excessive sweating
  • Urinary Incontinence
  • Involuntary muscle contraction or twitching
